Honest, science-based drug education has long been acknowledged as a cornerstone in the prevention of drug abuse among teenagers. Yet for decades, young people have been exposed, indeed bombarded, with messages about marijuana that are exaggerated. Many are just plain false. The latest "installment" of such scare tactics comes from an old source, Drug Abuse Resistance Education, aka D.A.R.E.

In 80s or 90s there was an urban legend that warned about flashing your lights to tell oncoming driver their lights were off. The myth was that it was a trap - a gang initiation and flashing your lights targeted you as their victim. It was total BS, but DARE spread it as fact. Any modicum of respect I had for the group was destroyed by that naitivity.
