I arrived in Norfolk a month before turning 20, on a coal freighter from Rotterdam with 9 other passengers on it. I had 40 bucks to my name. 2 suitcases. 1 with my books - the other with my clothes .I knew a family with 4 children who had invited me (I saved up my passage) and who then proceeded to exploit me til I got away from them after 8 months. My tough start did not deter me from staying here. I immediately felt at home in the US of A. Still do.
