... except in the cases of a few fanatics, the act of killing another human being -- whatever the circumstances -- is a gut-wrenching experience that can leave one scarred for life. I know more than one combat veteran who made a point of never trying to kill anybody -- "I shot out a lot of windows," one veteran of Patton's Third Army told me.
We think about the cost in terms of people dying and maimed, which are certainly of no small consequence. But we tend to ignore the cost to our young people of going around being bullies for our government and corporations. While we mourn our children for what has been done to them, we should not fail to mourn what we have made them do for us.
