This is exactly the point: Somehow we still put up with the idea that there is a kind of admirable "piousness" to religious beliefs that at bottom are a kind of cultural scam to, among other things, subjugate women.

Somehow it's still possible to mount a political campaign centered around the idea of returning to ancient thinking and practices because they are somehow morally superior, when in fact they are just the opposite of that.

Looking at you, Mike Huckabee.
