21. This American Puritanism of ours

is so destructive. The obsession over sex and control of others leads to a kind of self-fulfillng prophecy.

Oppress someone, tell them they are evil, and that sex must be rigidly controlled ... and watch, as they become a monster.

We need to recognize that it's not just hypocrisy or irony when a fanatic bent on telling everyone else how to live turns out to be twisted and damaged.

The twistedness and the damage are what lead people to obsess over other people's sex lives, and the obsession leaves them twisted and damaged.

It's a truly horrible dynamic, and yet it's woven into the fabric of our culture here.
