(154,021 posts)US journalism is extremely compromised. Independent media, and a lot of it is really bad...stories I could tell about one particular outlet people here quote often and trust...but some of it is really, really good. Let's just say this outlet posts a story I check it with other places, like I do with all of 'em. If I trust a source, more than if I do not actually...ergo, MSNBC will get checked three to four times, fox half as much. I know MSNBC is telling me what I want to hear.
If I make a mistake, and we all do, I correct it. Many a times it is the simple wording of things. I always go through a piece right after I post it. Some things do not jump out until then. It is how my mind works. Factual errors are always identified. Corrections should. This is a major oopsie.
I do not expect the AP to identify it. They set the standard that you should.
Your tell this was a purposeful error is...they removed party affiliation after they were caught. AP standard, I could quote it chapter and verse, got the book in the IPAD, says you identify the party, when available, in political stories. Acceptable ways: Joe Blow, democrat from....Joe blow, Republican from. If in office. Joe Blow (D-CA) gets tricky when you are talking state, since most people expect Joe Blow, with that, to be a Senator from California. House Joe Blow (D-51-CA). AD-85- R would be assembly district. Ward -5 for a city, or Council District 2 and of course state senate.
Even when writing a story about a state senator, I still spell that out because many people default to the U.S. Senate. It's not like I have to...but a few of my readers asked for clarity...yup, I am on a first name basis with more than a few. As they said, if I write about Joel Anderson, (quite the slime ball) they know he is not a U.S. Senator, but their mind wants to go there, and a few get sick just thinking about it.
And I think time to start work...and not with this story.
But this is not a mistake.
