3. In order to understand you have to go beyond the looking glass

Ayn Rand condemned utopias based on individual sacrifice and altruism. She claimed that these utopias cause mass murder. Hence Rand rejected the morality of of these utopias and proffered what she thought of as a moral and practical utopia premised on rational selfishness, individualism, and laissez-faire capitalism.

As I said, you're through the looking glass when you examine this garbage.

As for the psychology, I would say that lesser minds gravitate to the simple and the easy. And what could be simpler and easier than the glorification of greed and selfishness? "Conservatives" don't have to think. They simply barf back a series of bumper sticker slogans and cloak themselves in the banner of "freedom" and "liberty" and "strict constitutionalism" and all the other pablum.

Then they look at you funny if you question them and pepper you with ad hominem. So you see, it's a cocktail of lazy minds, small minds, and plain old every day nastiness.
