Inside the neonatal intensive care unit, Berta Jimenez bottle-fed and burped her grandson as he stretched his hand toward her shoulder and settled into her embrace.

“Are you full, my heart?” she whispered in Spanish.

Doctors at Methodist Women’s Hospital expect baby Angel to return home with his grandmother next week after a lengthy stay: Angel was delivered via C-section April 4, almost eight weeks after his mother was declared brain dead.

Karla Perez of Waterloo, Nebraska, had suffered a catastrophic brain bleed when she 22 weeks pregnant. Though she didn’t survive, Angel did. Her doctors and family decided to keep Perez on life support so Angel could continue to develop inside her.
