But in the past 15 years (actually longer), the press has done little questioning besides superficial stuff (birthplace and such). Also, under the propaganda model, some press serves as the opposition within a narrow area to give the illusion that we have a thoughtful and enterprising Fourth Estate. The opposition are the far right-wing nuts that bring up the aforementioned superficial debate (BENGAZI!!!!!!!!), but the debate such as universal healthcare is no where to be found.

Another example is Michelle Bachmann vs. Bernie Sanders. She was absolutely clueless, and with servility, Wolfe Blitzer ended the show with something along the lines of "what a thoughtful debate." No, Leslie, the only one with a thought was Bernie Sanders. The other just turned into a howler monkey.

The only press, in my view, that has done a decent job are your independent outlets.
