Everyone, probably including Romney himself, knows he won't win the general election. So his primary purpose is to use social issues to drive the crazies that make up the rump party the GOP has become to the polls. That's the only chance they have to maintain control of the House and keep the country ungovernable (and wall street unregulated.)
