Though he sometimes called himself a "conservative", and notoriously lost it towards the end about FDR and the New Deal, he was really *sui generis*, like all the great originals. He had more in common with Mark Twain or George Carlin, than any of them had/have with party-line ideologues of any stripe. And he was, in his prime, very, very funny...
