(14,912 posts)leaving loaded weapons out where a child can get their hands on them in the first place. It is TRAGIC that a child is dead and a mother will have to live with that for the rest of her life, but it was her actions that led to this tragic event happening. A gun is an inanimate object, it can't throw itself into someones had and discharge itself.
I grew up around guns. I was taught from a VERY young age to never touch one without a grown-up around because they were NOT TOYS and could hurt or kill someone very easily. My sisters were taught the same thing. None of us ever shot ourselves, or anyone else, accidentally. My father used to take us out to the shooting range so we could see how dangerous they were.
My own kids grew up around guns. They were taught the same way I was taught. Guns are NOT TOYS and you don't touch them without me being present. Mine were kept locked up, too. Gun owners who have children NEED to TEACH THEM about the dangers of guns from a very young age. They also need to teach them SAFETY and to RESPECT guns, just like you teach them the proper safety and respect for a bicycle, dirt bike or go-cart. My kids were riding a Yamaha P/W 50 dirt bike before they were riding a bicycle. They were also taught to RESPECT the power, and danger, of the dirt bike because the first time you get too comfortable and lose that respect for what it is is when you're going to get hurt or hurt someone else. That goes for grown-ups too. I still respect the power and danger of driving my vehicle because it can quickly become a deadly weapon also.
Peace,
