(20,176 posts)Think of it as three parallel continua. None of sex, gender or orientation are either/or for the most part.
<<------Sex------>> (Male on one end. Female on the other. Intersex people in the middle along the continuum. People who identify as sexless/neuter being tangent to the continuum.)
<<------Gender------>> (Masculine on one end. Feminine on the other. Gender-nonconforming and a lot of queer people in the middle along the continuum. Agendered people being tangent to the continuum. People whose gender conforms to their sex are "cisgendered"
<<------Orientation------>> (Heterosexual on one end. Homosexual on the other. A variety of sexual-orientations for people in the middle along the continuum. Asexual people being tangent to the continuum.)
Gender is largely about conforming with social-identifiers of one's sex (sex is biological). One (me) can be straight(or straight-ish), biologically-male and bear a gender-identity that does not conform with one's sex and/or orientation. In my case, I don't identify as being of any specific gender and my gender-identity is variable from one day to the next.
It's a lot more complex than that but that's the 4-paragraph summary.
