2. Greece has been devastated by austerity

Shops are shut down, people are out of work, and people are going hungry. If they continue this policy, they will have a full scale revolution to deal with and nobody wants that.

One wonders why the EU, especially the Germans, are so intransigent. I suppose the Germans have short memories that don't extend to just after World War II.
