In reply to the discussion: Bernie Sanders Proposes War Tax on Millionaires. Plans to add Amendment to Republican Budget [View all]merrily
(45,251 posts)long before I dreamed Sanders or anyone like him would run for President. We had a war tax to fund WWII and rightfully so.
To me, blood is infinitely more important than treasure, but both are important. We are visiting our debts on future generations, even as we visit our environmental sins on them.
Since Vietnam, we've eliminated the draft and all but eliminated war news coverage. We've made war all but invisible to the general public, with government carefully managing news of it. Instead of serving their function as watch dogs of government, corporate media allows government to manage news and enables its selling of wars to the public. We also raid Social Security to pay for wars, which is extremely unfair to elders and the disabled.
A war tax would ameliorate both the ability of the public to ignore war and the debts we run up because of wars and I could not agree more with it.
