(36,975 posts)I am older than you, white and raised in Texas, where racism was rampant. Fortunately my parents were raised in the midwest and were not racist. They always told me not to use the racist terms my little neighborhood friends used because it could hurt (AA) people's feelings. I barely remember separate water fountains and bathrooms. Even as a really little kid, those things never made sense to me. My high school was integrated, but the AA students all sat huddled together in classrooms and the lunchroom. They looked like they were terrified. Never spoke to any of the white kids, probably didn't dare to. I felt bad for them. Wish I had gotten to know some of them. Now it is just so natural to make friends with AAs. I don't think twice about it, of course. But if those students were frightened, as I suspected, your stories help explain why. I have always hated and never understood racism.
