I think that the attack upon our constitutional democracy began decades earlier, but that the selection of Bush-Cheney marked the point where the shadow government made a clear grab for power. Bugliosi's classic book on that election, appropriately titled "The Betrayal of America: How the Supreme Court Undermined the Constitution and Chose Our President," details how corrupt that power grab actually was. I'd add that in the beginning of Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11" documents the cowardice of many of the Democrats in Congress -- by no coincidence, those who took the patriotic stance were the black officials.

The 2000 election was, in my opinion, as stark in nature as Dallas or Watergate.
