things he is doing is setting up a small farm in order to provide something for the family. I talked to him about the small farmer of yesterday. Your income from a small farm then included every single thing that you provided for your own family as well as anything you could sell. Too often today the provisions for your own family are not considered as part of your contribution to the support of your family - instead it is called a hobby. For tax purposes that is good but it does not help you see that you are actually doing for your family.

In the 60s many people took a good look at what it cost them to work (uniforms, transportation, etc.) and realized that sometimes they could actually do just as well doing things from home like small farming but the idea did not catch on because you were not getting rich.
