(5,902 posts)The Stars and Bars was used not only as the battle flag of the CSA armies of Virginia and Tennessee and (as you mentioned) the CSA Navy, it was incorporated integrally into the "national flag" of the CSA itself.
In all cases representing not only the secessionist state, but its armed forces as well. In other words, both the civilian and military fronts of the greatest treason this country ever suffered (with the possible exception of the Bush administration).
It's worth reiterating here that its display is, in many quarters in the Deep South, meant as a deliberate celebration of said crimes against the United States - and many will tell you so to your face, especially if you doubt their sincerity in that regard.
Dylann Roof certainly thought of it that way.
