I quit the NRA shortly after Wayne LaPierre took over in the 1970s. Since then, they have become more and more resistant to any kind of sensible effort to keep guns away from nuts and goofballs. That's because so many of their members are the preppers, survivalists, secessionists, etc. who hide out in remote cabins and collect assault rifles. I was very surprised when one of their columnists suggested it might not be a good idea to push the open carry issue as far as walking into Chipotle with loaded assault rifles. Wow! Something almost rational from the NRA. You're right. They should be supporting expanded background checks, instead of pretending it will lead to confiscation, but they're stuck with the membership they have cultivated over the years with a campaign that scared away many of the more moderate members.
