Today we learned that the people involved in circulating fake candidate slates at the Maine GOP convention last week in order to mislead Ron Paul supporters were paid staffers of the Mitt Romney campaign. The names and identities of the perpetrators were provided by Jennifer (Ginger) Taylor, a Ron Paul delegate who broke the scandal on the day of the convention. Ms. Taylor is the Executive Director of a political action committee that works on healthcare issues in Maine.

According to Ms. Taylor (video), there were several Mitt Romney staffers involved in the alleged conspiracy. Taylor identified the key foot-soldier as Charlie Nejedly. Mr. Nejedly was the man who was caught distributing the misleading slates. From Romney campaign records Taylor was able to find out that Governor Romney paid Mr. Nejedly approximately $3,000 in each of the past two months.

The Romney campaign manager for Maine is Karl Beckstein, who was also implicated by Ms. Taylor as potentially having knowledge of the conspiracy to defraud the voters, although it is not clear that Mr. Beckstein was directly involved.

Finally, another Romney supporter, David Sorensen, is on film announcing several candidates that were improperly nominated due to the bogus slates. Several of those candidates had to withdraw their candidacies later.
