The NRA has on their roles, at best, 5% of gun owners. Even then there are some moderates hanging on.

Of the remaining 95% there is an even higher proportion of politically moderate, even leftist, gun owners. If half of those could be engaged they would outnumber NRA members by nearly 10:1. Any gun control measure with that support would be unstoppable.

So why doesn't that happen- many reasons. A few I can see are "all gun owners have blood on there hands", "you've all enabled this", "the only reason to own a gun is you want to kill", "gun ownership and racism go hand in hand", "small penis gun-humper" and signing open letters "Sincerely, the Gun Grabbers of Merica."

What advantage do those 95% have throwing their lot in with a movement that hates them as much as the actual murderers? The fear of some gun prohibition will pass? The NRA is effectively blocking all gun control efforts, so the 95% merely has to not do anything.

They are appalled at the violence but the choice is between two groups of fanatics. There is no lesser evil option.

Rarely a gun control measure comes up that is so good it engages that block; those nearly always pass.
