(43,775 posts)for their great work and that of many other organizations looking out for us. Very good that you get SPLC on your FB feed. Richard Cohen, SPLC Pres. was on Lawrence's show along with NAACP legal expert Janai Nelson, a Law Scholar from Duke Univ., journalist Eugene Robinson from South Carolina and others who provided outstanding perspectives and information.
Rachel and Chris Hayes also did good reporting on this topic last night. I've fallen off watching them but will change that esp. during this pivotal election period.
Glad but saddened to see all this come out, recall some of it from the early 90s. The pols. esp. southern ones who are associated with and funded by white supremacist groups are definitely looking out for themselves in this sudden change of heart and call to take down the Confederate battle flag, beyond the nine innocent victims recently killed sorry to say.
Murderer Dylan Roof had a lot of recorded influences and sources that the FBI is examining. Feel the heat. Some southern officials are acting genuinely I believe like SC state Rep. Brannon who lost a good friend and quickly spoke out about the flag removal and others which is very heartening.
Nikki Haley's press conference speech I found to be on the level of a HS student council meeting and quite self congratulatory. Absent was any real depth and tribute to the nine beautiful and innocent people who were massacred and the instigator of their action as Joan Walsh of Salon pointed out.
Like many I hope this horrible event initiates a closer look at the NRA, the terrible US mass shootings, and a major national examination and dialog about repairing the suffering and damage experienced by black people in this country. It's long overdue! We have a Lot of work to do, like an enormous Marshall Plan to rebuild the US as many are calling for.
Have a fine June day this Tuesday!
