7. It's kind of like DU's subscription groups, only very, very large

Here, we have groups like Fiction, Photography, Netflix, and so on.

At Reddit, they have the same, only they have lots more content. Each section of Reddit is called a subreddit, and you get to the subreddit using this format:
http://www.reddit.com/r/photography , i.e., after reddit.com, add /r/, and then the name of the subreddit you're interested in. There are many thousands of subreddits. Some are extremely busy (/r/politics, /r/news). Some hardly get any activity. You can create your own subreddits if you'd like.

Here are a couple of my favorite subreddits for general interest:

/r/TodayILearned : lots of people like this one. Example post: TIL the longest point in pro tennis history was a 643-shot rally that lasted for 29 minutes. Lots of trivial and not-so-trivial facts available here.

/r/historyporn : No, it's not pornography--it's historical photos. Example: photos of the Hindenburg exploding, pictures of bills being signed into law, pictures of women assembling aircraft in WW2, and so on.

I have lots of more specific subreddits I subscribe to, e.g., /r/bordercollie (I have one), /r/iphone (I have one), /r/bbq (I have a Weber grill), /r/rush (love the band, not the AM radio freak), and so on. Anything you're interested in, from gardening to simple living to marijuana to rabbit foot collecting, you can find a group on reddit that covers it.
