A lot of people, enough to say that the culture as a whole, don't care about such critters. (There are exceptions to any cultural generalization, of course.)
Where I live my kid was grossed out by the glee with which the neighborhood teens avidly pulled the tails and legs off of anoles that they caught, or pulled and chopped toads to pieces . When some of the kids pointed the mayhem out to their parents, they attitude was either "it's that funny" or "don't bring that in my house."
This is north of Houston. When Bush II in his childhood exploded toads, we blamed it on his upper-crust, heartless, soulless upbringing. Can't do that for my mostly black working-class neighborhood, so let's just blame it on teen males.
Then again, last night I slaughtered ants by the thousand with no remorse at all. Really, a fire ant hill 18-24" away from outside spigot I use for watering is a crappy place for them. (Esp. when you stand there, in flip-flops, in the dark.) The little bastards got what they deserved.
