The national uproar over immigration policy continued Monday, as Kathryn Steinle's parents said federal and local authorities "let us down" by allowing a repeatedly deported felon back on the streets before he allegedly killed their daughter as she was strolling on a pier in San Francisco.
The interview with Fox News' Bill O'Reilly came as a new government report was released Monday showing that more than 1,800 immigrants whom the federal government wanted to deport last year were nevertheless released from local jails and later rearrested for various crimes.
Nearly a third of the new offenses were nonviolent crimes, including drugs and stolen vehicles. But the report also cited six examples of more serious crimes, including one case of child molestation in San Mateo County, two burglaries in Santa Clara County and a rape in San Francisco. The report gave no details about those cases.
In their heartfelt interview Monday, the parents of Kathryn Steinle, the 32-year-old slain July 1 in broad daylight, expressed disappointment with local communities like San Francisco and Santa Clara County that have refused to hold people for possible deportation by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.
