It is a warning. I also see him as more the "guy you want to have a beer with" and if you look at history that is the person that has generally won. Going back to at least Reagan.
Bush 1 might be the only exception to that rule. Otherwise Reagan, Clinton, Bush2, and Obama were all MUCH more relateable than their opponents.
