(6,448 posts)for standing up to the ignorant who speak before they think. I am involved with two churches, one Episcopalian and the other an American Baptist. BOTH have ministries that reach out to the community.
FBCS has two dinners week that serve the community. One of the dinners is with Celebrate Recovery but one does not have to be a member of the groups in order to get a meal. FBCS also has a clothing bank (see link for video) that is open three days a week. Food, clothing, children's books and kitchen ware are free to anyone who needs it.
Like your church we send teams to help where help is needed. We are having an ice cream social next Sunday with all funds going toward a medical mission. A team from our church is headed to Haiti next month. Other teams have helped build whatever the particular community needs.

St. Stephen's Episcopal Church has a food bank that is open each Wednesday. They work with St. Mary's Food Bank and that food bank does receive funds from the gov't. That being said, St. Stephen's does have to pay for the food we receive. We are small and rely on donations from the congregation.
Since St. Mary's Food bank does NOT supply turkeys at Thanksgiving the congregation steps up and last year we were able to give 75 families a turkey for Thanksgiving plus the trimmings. This was in addition to the box the family received for that month.
It is sad that many here at DU do not recognize the small community churches and how they silently help. Sort of like when Jesus told us to pray in silence, your church and mine, do our service in silence.
