17. I think it has to do with perceived status, religion and taxes

after one gets financial stability.

I had one friend who was pro-choice...sort of. He thought women should have the right to choose but he was personally against abortion. He supported a lot of Democratic ideas/ideals but it was- Taxes - that really made him more conservative over time. The thought of having to pay taxes was so repellent to him that he fully went right. Money became more important than everything else. It defined him... along with designer clothes, the best that money could buy and all the status he thought it represented.


I have another friend (from the same country) who was working towards getting his citizenship here years and years ago. He has long since been a citizen. He too has the same views on choice/abortion.
He wanted to pay taxes. He wanted to because to him it meant that he had achieved citizenship. That was the status that meant something to him.
