It's the difference between finding it necessary to tell your family members, young and old, they should watch what they say to white folk - not get uppity, as it were - because they might be shot in the back by any of them, perhaps lynched, even by the police officers who are supposed to be there to protect them. Solely because of the color of their skin.

That is a fantastic privilege all white folk have in this country. It wouldn't be a privilege if black folk weren't treated very differently because of the color of their skin in so many ways.

So take this point to heart, get it through your head, whatever - that means white privilege isn't about you.

It has nothing to do with how YOU feel. How you feel is about you. Discussing you in this context would be selfish, really doesn't mean jack shit to anyone except you. That is one of the few things you are in complete control of, that mostly no one else can affect without your assistance.

The other reason you should not feel guilty - everyone has a privilege. Yours is to find many less barriers to life because you are white. If you want to feel guilty, go ahead. But no one else give a rat's ass whether you feel guilty or not, when a murdered victim of color, killed by a police gun, is laying in the street.

That is their privilege.

Because it's not about you.
