I don't know what it was -- but as Ino wrote above -- others have reported very similar experiences. The 1-2 thing is particularly intriguing.

Please encourage your son to write down his memories and impressions. As time goes on, they likely will change. Writing them down allows him to compare what he thought today with new memories about the event.
