(127,262 posts)All covered wages are taxed at 1.45% for Medicare. Meanwhile, the rate for wages under $118,500 is 6.2% for Social Security. Employers are required to pay an equal match.
There is also a Medicare surtax of 0.9% on wages in excess of $200,000 (single person), $250,000 (married, filling jointly) and $125,000 (married, filing separately).
