There is an underlying current of white male privilege running through US culture which naturally (or "collectively"
reacts against a threat to its continuity, however. The repugs are not unaware of this condition of anxiety, and have played it for all its worth since before the election. Think of all the people who are certain that the country has gone to crap since the election, and that Obama somehow is destroying the country. It could easily be argued that he has done exactly what any other president would have done, and done it well, and that the recovery is slow but steadily moving things in the right direction. Jobs, GDP, stock markets, government spending, taxation, foreign affairs, etc, all have fared well and are trending to the good by any objective measure. Except - by his position he is a threat to white male privilege. Nothing else.
