3. They've been around for centuries

We call the older selfies "portraits," but it's the same thing: monuments to vanity, previously couched in hushed historical reverence. Hell, the National Portrait Gallery is full of them.

For that matter, some of the earliest photographs were selfies.

The primary difference is that they can be snapped and shared more easily today. Other than that, there is nothing new under the sun.
