(154,021 posts)Dr King was a pain in the ass to the system, So was Malcolm X. Both men became an incredible hard issue to control. This is the part that things like Selma do not even start to hint at.
Both men knew that they had to at times do some showy stuff... this is the street theater that always comes with movements. That is what happened on Saturday, street theater. But not one of their street theater was done without thinking carefully of the long game. This had none of that thinking.
AA are a repressed minority in this country. In some places it is even less than 10 percent of the population, How the hell do you think we are going to get changes in institutions that are not dominated by them? Who do you think controls those halls of policy making? In many cases, their allies. Some of whom will have their feelings hurt and turn away. BRAVO!!!!
At the end of his life, Malcolm X understood this. He could not go at it alone, and he wanted to earlier on. These women, are self identified leaders, and want to to at it alone. You need allies, And putting tac nukes under those alliances is not going to help you in the long run.
So perhaps it is not relevant to you, but I wish the movement starts thinking of this in more than it makes me feel good, I took it to the man! This movement is flat as hell, so anybody can claim to be a leader of it. but it is relevant to the near and far future. Maybe I am thinking about the lessons of history.
By the way the downfall of OWS, partially (and some segments are still around), was precisely the lack of a clear leadership and that anybody could speak for OWS... and nobody did. I just read Mrs Garza's statements on this. I actually saved it as well. She does not get it fully either. Or rather she is starting to realize this is a problem. But she does not realize what the solution is.
None of these folks are dumb... but some of these folks, like many young leaders around the world, are naive. It has nothing to do with skin color either, before you post that. It is age, and life is about to deal them some really hard lessons. Some will learn from them... some will not. It is what it is.
