(58,785 posts)28. On a more inspiring note, Carter joined to eradicate guinea worm disease and today there are less
than a couple dozen cases, 15 reportedly, down from 3.6 million. The CDC says those are found in only 4 countries, down from 198 areas in the 1980s. I learned this from Jonathan Alter, who said the "serpent" on the staff on the symbol of medicine is believed to be a guinea worm, which was plaguing the human race back in biblical times.
I hope President Carter lives to see this disease officially eradicated, but all the people who were never crippled and suffering are already a magnificent legacy, and only one of many.
