in votes, states, and delegates. He almost didn't make the ticket, and only did when RR realized that Ford on the ticket would bring up Nixon's political ghost.

I still do think that the GOP still woulda won 1988 because there were a lotta people Reagan coulda put on his ticket, given that Carter's approvals were sub-40 (which actually means something, unlike sub-50). In 1988, the Dems were similar to GOP today; still in the wilderness and in denial about how out of the mainstream they were perceived to be.
