In reply to the discussion: Is it to much to ask Democratic Underground to chill out with the racist crap? [View all]Syzygy321
(583 posts)Here's the thing: I often have an alternate interpretation of race stuff from the mainstream. But I keep my mouth shut (mostly!
) because, I figure, if you are blackish or brownish or reddish or whateverish, race stuff is an open wound for you. And anytime I stick my big nose in and yell "Well you don't KNOW that the cop (or whomever) was acting out of racism" - that would be me pouring salt in your wound. The salt of not-respected and never-listened-to.
I think this way, because I am female - and I know how crappy it feels to say "XYZ is, yup, anOther example of the usual misogyny I have been subject to all my life" - only to have someone else (usually male; go figger!) post "You're a whining moron; you are just IMAGINING that that was gender-based hatred! You don't know what you are talking about, you silly thing!"
See, I don't like it when people do that to me. It's dismissive and it makes things worse. It's like misogyny magnified. And it's done here all the time by lovely democrats.
So I assume that what feels like salt in my wounds, feels like salt in the wounds of others. So I stay out of it.
The downside to people politely shutting up while the wounded people ID their wounds, is that voices and opinions (worthwhile ones; maybe truth-telling ones) are silencing themselves. But I think, in the short term, that's a downside that's worth the upside (which is, people feeling respected here and gathering strength and confidence).
Or, y'know, I could be wrong.
