(31,402 posts)I get really irritated when people overly indulge in blaming racism, sexism, or homophobia for words or actions that could easily be explained in other ways. There are so many glaring and hurtful examples of these bigotries that it is nonsensical to me to be on the lookout for more. It's almost like people are looking to further victimize themselves. I am female, and not shy about calling out sexism. But I don't go out searching for it. That would put me in the role of being a victim all.the.time.
But what you said about open wounds makes a lot of sense. And just like with a wound, any little thing can make the pain flare back up. A turn of a phrase, a hidden post, a careless - or callous - remark, can hurt people more than we might expect if we are not sensitized to that same type of attitude.
So thanks for that insight.
