(19,834 posts)Usually not in a large metro area. I live 25 miles from Little Rock in the Ouachita national forest in a house I built with my own 2 hands. I built it to surpass the National Electrical Code, because I could. I was planning to be on solar, but never could afford it, but at most I use less than 500 Kwh a month. I have 3 mini-split heat pumps and a GE Hybrid hot water heater that helps to keep the energy use low.
A couple of the local electric co-op guys are building them small homes like mine as they like how cheap it is to run.
Located in a city with codes, I would not have been able to. But I surpassed the codes anyway because I did not want it to have an electrical fire or gas fire. No gas in the house, just to the 8kw propane generator that runs the whole house with the exception of the range.
