It's the number that is a mistake on the part of the author of the OP. Americans make a lot of mistakes with numbers and have no idea who large the population of Germany was at the time of the Holocaust.
But the Jewish people and many others who were taken to work and death camps in the NAZI era did not "follow." Not after the beginning of the exterminations. They were arrested and forced to leave. Many tried to escape. Many tried to emigrate. Those subject to the Holocaust did not willingly "follow."
People have forgotten what preceded the Holocaust. The Krystall Nacht. The yellow stars. The fact that Jews were excluded from jobs and from school.
The responses to my comment indicate to me that few of those responding have first hand knowledge of people who survived the Holocaust and haven't really read much about it. That explains a lot of the anti-Israel sentiment on DU.
I am not surprised, but I am disappointed that anyone thinks that Jewish people followed Hitler and went to prison camps willingly. They tried to survived. That is all.
They knew the score. It was the German people who claimed they did not know what was really happening and who followed Hitler, not the Jews, Homosexuals, genuine Christians, Gypsies, or other persecuted groups.
