(39,215 posts)been forced to live in the ghettos. They were forced to wear the Star of David so they could be identified. Many were harassed continually. And many from all over Europe were fleeing the growing violence. They were a trapped abused people for centuries in Europe. By 1942 the abuse had gotten a lot worse already. The death trains may have looked like a way out but I would be very surprised if the Jews actually trusted TPTB. They were never given a reason to trust them.
The one thing I do believe is that they could never have conceived of the horrible lengths the Germans would go. None of us could have. We are not so innocent anymore. We know just how evil we can be.
I can see them fleeing the ghettos on those trains with the hope that they would not be killed if they obeyed. I can see them walking into the new ghetto they were moved to (concentration camps). And I can see that they would believe the showers were safe. All because at that point they could not conceive of the evil that faced them.
All of this does not imply a willingness or even blindness to their danger. It implies a desperation of a trapped and abused people. And to some extent it implies that they still had faith in mankind and in God.
In that kind of danger they were not paying attention to what was happening?
Sorry I will never believe that.
