My father passed when I was 26, and I saw him take his last breath. Unfortunately, he was asleep at the time, in the hospital. That was the most traumatic death I had witnessed, as my first really close death, and one that causes tears during reflections after 30 years. My mother passed minutes before I arrived to join my sister in watching her. Since she had prior scares, I was adjusted to her failing state, though I don't know how I would have been if I were there when she passed. My mother had hospice care too. It is such a wonderful program, as she wanted to die in her own bedroom and not uncomfortably in a cold and noisy hospital room, being awoken every 30 minutes.
Take comfort in knowing that you and he were together, knowing your presence was there, giving him a peaceful passage.
This will be a difficult time for you, and one which will remain vivid in your memories. You are very brave and generous to have offered yourself in this manner. Stay strong, Mia.
My thoughts are with you.
