I thought that originally he wanted/expected to die after ruthlessly killing all those kind people.

I have no doubt that the god-fearing families of those who died, will want this plea deal accepted. Not only to save the trauma that a trial would bring, but also because they are caring souls, who would not want this man to be put to death.

Taxpayers get to support him in prison now for perhaps decades to come.
