Although women didn't have the vote yet, some were quite influential. One that comes to mind is Abigail Adams, who like Barbara was wife of one president and mother of another, but unlike Barbara had a brain of her own. She was a serious intellectual scholar, and a campaigner for women's rights and against slavery.

Of somewhat later individuals - what about the amazing heroine Harriet Tubman?
