Maybe I am being optimistic here but I think both Boehner and McConnell have done a fairly effective job at keeping the fringe right TP republicans at bay limiting their exposure which in turn has keep the true craziness of the TP out of the limelight for a majority of voters. With Boehner and potentially McConnell both vacating their leadership positions if a real TP republican like Cruz gets the position then the extreme positions the TP is based on will be on full display nightly in the news and perhaps it will wake up voters to just how far and extreme the TP really is...

But like I said maybe I am just being naively optimistic here.
