(27,247 posts)I still rank that serendipitous 1986 eclipse as one of my most amazing celestial experiences, along with the 1999 eclipse, and an event that happened in maybe 1987 when some Soviet space junk entered the atmosphere. I was in a late night caravan headed for the Buffalo River for a float trip, when we all stopped in the middle of nowhere to watch a mighty glow that appeared in the sky. It was a spectacular sight, to say the least. It wasn't until a couple of days later that we heard it was some Soviet space junk that was burning up upon reentry into the atmosphere.
The most disappointing celestial experience I've had was in 1986, when Halley's Comet was supposed to be visible in the night sky. Even though I headed for the darkest place I knew of (a rural area called Hogeye), I still couldn't see it.
