My Grandparents fell to the dark side from being lifelong Dems to rabid Reagan supporters. They fell via religion- I asked them once when I was learning about politics why they were afraid of Commies- their answer was that Communists closed Churches. Being a sincere Catholic alter boy at the time, that just struck me as utterly wrong- christianity is MEANT to be an underground and persecuted religion...Matthew practically painted it in red letters!

Even more than that, they saw the decline of their Church's power in the real world, and wanted to reverse that. A lot of the remaining flock love the RW because they promise to empower the churches and hurt the rival religions and people they don't approve of.

It's pretty sick all the way around.
