94. If you define anyone who supports gun rights as the "NRA crowd,"

you would be in conflict with the Democratic Platform concerning firearms.

There are a great many loyal Democrats who also own gun and support gun rights, all without supporting the NRA, no less being a member. Remember that the NRA has about 5 million members, out of 80-100 million lawful American gun owners. More than 1 out of every 3 American owns a gun, and the NRA represents just 5-6% of them. Many of these gun owning Americans are Democrats, as is evident from the postings on DU, and more importantly, they often reside in contested states we need to advance an overall liberal agenda.

Firearms. We recognize that the individual right to bear arms is an important part of the American tradition, and we will preserve Americans' Second Amendment right to own and use firearms. We believe that the right to own firearms is subject to reasonable regulation. We understand the terrible consequences of gun violence; it serves as a reminder that life is fragile, and our time here is limited and precious. We believe in an honest, open national conversation about firearms. We can focus on effective enforcement of existing laws, especially strengthening our background check system, and we can work together to enact commonsense improvements—like reinstating the assault weapons ban and closing the gun show loophole—so that guns do not fall into the hands of those irresponsible, law-breaking few.
