How Robert Caro’s ‘The Power Broker’ came to be published

More than 40 years ago, Robert Caro carried his draft of “The Power Broker” into Alfred A. Knopf in seven boxes.
The late, famed publisher Tony Schulte asked him how many copies of his manuscript he’d brought along.

“One,” Caro replied, describing to a literary crowd at Knopf’s 100th anniversary Thursday night how his Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of Robert Moses came to be published. “In the era in which we live today, it sometimes seems as if almost everything in the world of books is in constant change and flux,” adding that Knopf “has endured for a hundred years while holding fast to the highest standards and values.”

Also at the packed event at the New York Public Library were authors Judy Blume, Sam Shepard, Renata Adler, Fran Lebowitz, Richard Price, Marisa Acocella Marchetto and Diane Rehm.

Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winner Toni Morrison described how her first book sold only 300 copies. And Patti Smith gave a surprise performance after telling the crowd, “I’m the new girl.” Her follow-up memoir, “M Train,” is out Tuesday.
